NOT A PERFECT CHURCH
...BUT MAYBE PERFECT FOR YOU!

Faith United Church is constantly under construction. It's kind of funny, but, when Jesus said, "I will build my church (Matthew 16:18)," He didn't actually say anything about finishing the project! God does not change. His Word does not change. What we believe does not change. However, a church must always be changing.

We invite YOU to join in the process.

You see, we're not talking about a building, made of bricks and steel, we're talking about a Church, made of hope, and love, and people. It will be beautiful because it is the Bride of Jesus Christ.

"...Christ loved the church. He  gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word. He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church  without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault."
-Ephesians 5:25-27 (NLT)

"Christ's love makes the church whole. His words evoke her beauty. Everything he does and says is designed to bring the best out of her, dressing her in dazzling white silk, radiant with holiness."
-Ephesians 5:26-27 (MSG)

What exactly does this "Bride of Jesus Christ" look like? Because there are lots of good Churches out there, she tends to look a little different from one Church to another. However, we're trying to build a Church here at Faith United that is characterized by the following:

  • Faith in Jesus Christ that is authentic, applying His teachings to all aspects of life, while extending Grace to those who fail and respect to those who disagree.
  • Worship that is casual without  being careless, focused on Jesus Christ, and unhindered by the traditions or expectations of people.
  • Relationships that are strong because of the Holy Spirit within us and our common pursuit of Jesus Christ, an ever-growing and expanding fellowship.
  • Ministries and programs that meet actual needs in ourselves and others in our community.
  • A reputation as a place in our community where people are treated with love and respect, and given relevant Biblical truth.

We believe God is bringing people to Faith United Church that He wants to use in the process of building His Church. We're not doing this so that we can simply get bigger, although everyone is always welcome. Its simply that we're not interested in becoming the next mega-whatever, or writing a book about how to grow a church. We're doing this because we love Jesus Christ and we love people. We simply want to be what He wants us to be.

So, our invitation is pretty straightforward: If you're ready to become part of the process of building a Church that is committed to Worshiping Jesus Christ, studying and applying Biblical truth, accepting people where they are, celebrating the lives God changes, and sharing the story of His love - if you'd like to help build a Church that will last until Jesus returns - come check us out!

Here are some answers to questions people usually have about Faith United Church.

WHAT KIND OF CHURCH IS THIS?

Sometimes we wonder ourselves! Just kidding... Actually, that's the first question most people ask when getting ready to visit a church and it is an important one. Faith United is first and foremost a CHRISTIAN Church. We're made up of people who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior, or are seeking answers about Him.
Secondly, we are a Baptist Church (but please don't let that scare you). We are a  Baptist Church in that the Ordinance of Baptism is part of the way we do things. Baptism is the ceremony of immersing a person who has received Jesus Christ as their Savior in water. It symbolizes the spiritual cleansing that we believe Jesus gives us at the moment of Salvation.

HOW DO PEOPLE DRESS?
Yep, that's usually the second question people ask when getting ready to visit a church. We completely understand! Visiting a new place is weird enough without sticking out because you're not dressed the way everyone else is. Relax. That's not going to happen at Faith United. When we say, "come as you are," we really mean it! We encourage people to dress in the way they are most comfortable. For some, this means a suit and a tie, while others are more inclined to wear jeans and a t-shirt. While we ask that folks dress modestly and in good taste, whatever style you choose is completely up to you. If we  had a dress code it would be: "please wear clothes."

WHAT STYLE IS THE WORSHIP SERVICE?
There it is - the third most commonly asked question. In answering this, we're not trying to be cute or tricky, but we really like to avoid categories when it comes to the way we Worship at Faith United Church. We have a live band and a lot of Sundays our music is loud and full of energy. Other Sundays we dig into our heritage and use some of the old-school hymns of the Church. Sometimes we mix styles, or use updated versions of old songs. We also use a lot of prayer, Scripture reading, video, PowerPoint, and anything else we can think of to help us Worship in a way that we hope honors Jesus Christ.

HOW LONG IS THE SERVICE?
Our Worship Celebration begins about 11:00am and concludes by 12:15pm on most Sundays.

WHAT ABOUT THE SERMON?
Pastor Steve's sermons are expository in style, which simply means he lets the Bible speak for itself, and uses a variety of stories, video clips, and other multi-sensory experiences to apply the truth to modern life. They are usually about 30 minutes in length and less painful than a root canal.

So you're thinking of coming by and checking us out in person? Awesome! We look forward to meeting you. Our Worship Celebration starts at 11:00am and dress is always casual. Bring a Bible if you have one, but don't worry if you don't, we'll give you one.

Over the last few years Faith United Church has laid aside a lot of tired tradition and pompous pretense. We have no quarrel with traditional congregations and we're not putting down those who like a lot of production. We've just simplified everything so that what we're left with is an approach that is more concerned with authenticity than perfection and more focused on being relevant than growing larger. We've discovered that there are lots of folks who just want to Worship Jesus, learn from the Bible, make a few friends, and help out where they can. Maybe you're one of those folks.

Faith United Church is made up of regular, every day, "Flint-type" folks. If you're in the Flint-area, chances are you already know some of us. We live mostly in southern Genesee County throughout Flint, Grand Blanc, Swartz Creek, and Mundy Township. We are united by our common desire to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ authentically in all areas of our lives. We don't claim to be perfect, or superior. We're just trying to live what we believe by being good neighbors, raising our children well, working hard, managing our finances, and showing love and respect to everyone.

We are committed to:
     - Worshiping Jesus Christ authentically.
     - Learning and applying Biblical truth.
     - Accepting people where they are.
     - Celebrating the lives God changes.
     - Sharing the love of Jesus Christ.

Faith United Church is a "working Church." Jesus taught us to be good neighbors and we believe that applies to our individual neighborhoods, as well as, the things we do as a Church. We want to be part of making the Flint-area a better place to live by helping out whenever we can and lending a hand to those who need it. Everyone who is part of Faith United Church is expected to pitch in and help out wherever they can.

If you're looking for a group of people who take Jesus Christ very seriously without taking themselves too seriously, Faith United Church might just be the place for you. We invite you to come visit with us this Sunday and see for yourself.
