The Basic Premise that Underlies a Prayer of Petition or Intercession. |
Online I was reading Great Prayers of the Bible. The author of this website is Dr. Ralph F. Wilson. While reading I read the statement that is the heading of this Prayer article and it struck my heart for consideration.
THE PRAYER OF PETITION OR INTERCESSION
What is the basic premise that should underlie it?
The Prayer of Petition is asking God to meet our daily needs; Prayer of Intercession is seeking God’s intervention in the needs of others. Prayer of Intercession is Praying for others!
Exodus
32:9-10 (NKJV)
“And the LORD said to Moses, "I have seen this people, and indeed it is a
stiff-necked people! Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot
against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation."
GOD
HATES REBELLION AGAINST HIS WILL
Moses has been on Mt. Sinai for forty days, communion with his Eternal, Almighty
God! Moses is having a tremendous experience rejoicing in God’s Holy Presence.
However, the children of Israel are at the foot of the mountain rejoicing, not
in God’s Eternal Presence, they are dancing and rejoicing before a golden calf,
a pagan idol, and calling it their god who will continue to be their leader.
Such pagan conduct provoked the anger, the wrath of God. He called them a
"stiff-neck people."
"Stiff-necked is a reference to a
mule or ox which would resist the lead rope and refuse
to let its master lead it. Instead it
would stiffen its neck against the reins.”

God is holy, righteous; there is no SIN that mars His character. Thus He hates sin with a vengeance.
Psalms 97:9-10a (NKJV) For You, LORD, are most high above all the earth; You are exalted far above all gods. You who love the LORD, hate evil!
Exodus 32:10-11 (NKJV) Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation. Then Moses pleaded with the LORD his God, and said: "LORD, why does Your wrath burn hot against Your people whom You have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?”
As Moses intercedes for the children of Israel, Moses does not attempt to defend Israel of its sin of idolatry. He appeals to God’s Love and Mercy. God had by His Eternal Power had used Moses to deliver Israel from the bondage of Egypt. Moses declares that God had accomplished this great feat of victory for Israel through and by His great power and with His mighty hand!
Exodus 32:12-14 (NKJV) Turn from Your fierce wrath, and relent from this harm to Your people. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants, to whom You swore by Your own self, and said to them, 'I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven; and all this land that I have spoken of I give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever." So the LORD relented from the harm which He said He would do to His people.
Observe Moses’ premise, his FOUNDATION, for his prayer of intercession for God to cool His wrath again Israel. [God,] remember [Your covenant to] Abraham, Isaac, and Israel.” They are Your servants and You promised to multiply them.” Thus, on the premise of Moses’ Prayer, reminding God of His promise to Israel, God “relented from the harm which he said he would do to His people.”
There are those who want to debate whether Prayer changes or influences God’s decisions or does prayer change the one who is praying. To me, that is not the issue. We are to PRAY and keep on praying and depend on God that through His Love and Mercy, and Mighty Power to hear our prayers of intercession for others and then on the basis of His Eternal Will, answer according to His divine will!
Moses simply placed the case, as he saw it, before God and interceded for Israel and God answered prayer and spared Israel from His wrath!
